The talk about Scientology lately sort of got me to thinking.
For the sake of argument, if you are religious, but not a member of a mainstream Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, or Hindu house of worship, why have you looked outside of these choices?
Some fringe churches I'm thinking of are:
Wican
Snake handlers
Jehovah's Witness
Scientology
I mean no disrespect, but I'm just curious.

I suppose I fall into the 'catagory' you speak of. I'm 'fringe' but of no religion. I'm not an atheist, but my supreme being is not a being but a collection of all things.
A religion that is in close alignment with how I think and act over all, would sound cultish and even repulsive to the uneducated, and that is Satanism. Contrary to the common thought, Satainst do not worship anything and are atheists. It's not the spiritual aspects that I respect as much as the moral code Satanists have. In a nutshell, you do what you do, I do what I do, don't mess with me and I won't mess with you. Mutual respect is all good...however, if you mess with innocents, you may have to deal with my wrath, as it is my responsibility to stand up for those who need help.
Why? I suppose a lot has to do with how I grew up, without any religion, left to figure it out on my own.
Thank you very much. This is a really good answer to my question. I suppose, in the end, we accept what we are exposed to as children, as to what is right. If we are not exposed to anything, then we go with whatever influences us in life.

While not a cult as the definition is non belief in a personalized, creator deity/deities... some of the more militant atheists do act in a very cult like, echo chamber, mentality.
Christianity is a cult too. It's a blood/death cult.
I'd agree that "Christianity", as the name hijacked by fundamentalists and evangelicals, is a cult.
You only have to look at the trouble they have on leaving:
Many cannot adapt to the real world, or find anything meaningful, once they have left.
Their previous friends and family will also often abandon them.
Often they were so preoccupied with "End of Times" madness, that they have very little proper education, training and adaptability as well, as it previously did not matter.
