A random thought occured to me and, not having any particular religious background to draw on, I wondered what y'all thought.

If god is opposed to sacrifice in his name, what was Jesus?

I was always under the impression that Jesus was the "last" sacrifice, since sacrifice was practiced in the OT, and the OT didn't become obsolete (yeah I know that's not the right word, but you get my drift) until Jesus was crucified.

Jesus became the final and ultimate sacrifice for sin. Jesus said in John 19:30 "It is finished"....paid in full.

Yeah, I think that's what I said except you said it more succinctly.

Jesus is supposed to be God himself.

God to Jesus: I'm sending you to earth to die for the people I created, because I need to know they are sorry for their sins. I'm sorry, I can't just forgive them without killing you, er.. me.. Even though I am all powerful, and it is my fault for giving them free will. It's gonna be brutal, but it's ok, you're really me, and it will turn out peachy.

(The trinity is just an excuse to not call Christianity a polytheism.)

So in the older religions, the commands of god to sacrifice animals to pacify him were mis-interpreted? All the religious wars in his name, where untold numbers sacrificed their lives to his glory, were a misunderstanding of his desires?

Even the rapture has death as a pre-requisite. To me, that would be a sacrifice.

Just saying.....
