The reason I used the word immoral in the OP is because religious groups who have opposed new casinos have used that word and this is a religious forum so I was looking for a little input from the religious people as well as the non religious. You could really say the owners of these casinos who have every aspect of gambling down to a science are the ones who seem to be lacking any ethics as opposed to the gamblers who frequent their casinos. The casinos are set up to win, that's what they do for a living and there's very little a gambler can do to improve their odds although some games have better odds than others. If a gambler becomes very skilled and wins without cheating they are often asked to leave casinos, this hardly seems fair when the casinos are passing out free drinks to loosen the pocketbooks and the will power of the gamblers not to mention their impaired sense of judgement. Still, I like the excitement of places like Las Vegas, I'm just not going to give them my hard earned money.

I don't find it immoral - just stupid! From personal experience, it's just throwing money away. I went to Las Vegas once when friends dragged me there. I was bored after losing my $50 gambling budget on the quarter slots. I thought the city was tacky and unless you're into gambling, smoking, and drinking heavily, it's just not a fun place to visit. I don't find it addicting at all, and will never step foot in another casino if I can help it!

Unfortunately this is generally how it begins; just because everyone else is doing it most people find it hard to say no.
Or they can't stop gambling because they can't accept their loss.
And if the majority claims that gambling = a good time many people simply agree because they are afraid of becoming part of the minority.
Just like in high school where everyone wants to be popular instead of the loner/outsider.

Gambling is an activity, nothing more. If a person becomes addicted to that activity it certainly can cause problems for him or her and for their loved ones, but the activity is not immoral. It's simply an activity, something people do....or not do. Most people who go to Vegas or Atlantic City or an Indian Casino go there for a couple hours of slot machines or poker or what-have-you and leave again having had socialization and enjoyed the activity. Most are not addicts. Personally it does not really interest me because I don't like the noise and the commotion, but the friends I have who like an occasional jaunt to Vegas to throw quarters in a machine are not addicts and certainbly not immoral. This "immorality" thing gets taken to the extremes sometimes....in my strange opinion.

So is crime.
Especially if you don't care how you 'earned' the money.

So is this forum, Tricky...an activity, I mean. And if one becomes addicted to it...is that immoral? I do not know.

Crime is an activity, but not every activity is a crime.
Some legal activities are immoral, and some illegal activities are moral.
Making profit is legal, but sometimes immoral like offering people jobs where they earn far less than minimum wages.

Encouraging gambling is legal and casinos are even allowed to offer credit to gamblers who shouldn’t be able to get 1 (like addicted gamblers), which in my eyes is immoral.
Unless you voluntarily identify yourself as an addicted gambler the casino will do nothing to prevent gambling addiction for their visitors.
They usually only provide a gambling addiction hotline number when you ASK for it.

Do American casino's even check each visitor's entry ticket (or ID) to see if they are allowed to gamble like they do in here in the Netherlands?
Can a 16 year old walk into an American casino and gamble all his money away?

No, a 16-year old cannot walk into a casino and gamble his money away in the USA. Unless he or she has a false ID...and I'll bet they have false ID's in the Netherlands, too. But that isn't my point....I suppose what I am thinking is that immorality is not cut and dried according to what other people say or believe. I do not gamble but I don't feel gambling or casinos, in and of themselves, are "immoral". And that was the OP...it was not about drugs or prostitution or any other "activity".
