There are two issues responsible for this. Evolution and homosexuality. The church in my opinion has done a horrible job at addressing those two issues and as a result is seen as backwards and rigid by today's young people.

Many religious are, but there are also many who are more liberal and progressive. The old dogma has to adjust to the 21st century, otherwise the trend will continue.

I think many church's fixation on controlling sex lives also seems a little dated.
