Yea, but the easter island story ended more or less happily. Today there are plenty of people still living on the island and it's a tourist attraction to boot. The global story will likely end the same way.

ohh really.. they overpopulated stripped all the trees, worshiped material things , then wen't to war with eachother and killed off most of their populous so a few could live happily ever after!!!! now just imagine that scenario on a global scale.. there is at least a billion enslaved persons on planet earth right now as i speak. the forest and jungles are being stripped, we are at war for material gain "oil". greed and corruption are ramped!!! at least a billion people are starving and have no clean water to drink.. looks like a great future for the future gens of planet earth.. ohhhh i forgot the messiah is coming to save us!!!! right

Oh come on now... the Pyramids, the Collesium and the Parthenon could also be described as monuments to wealth, power and greed but they are still cool to go see. The same with the Moai on Easter Island.
All mankind can do is ruin the world for himself. Life has been pretty much wiped off the earth before more than once Extinction event - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia but it always comes back, given enough time.
So, even if no humans make it, *someone* (evolved from here or not) will eventually run across the the crumbling remains of our world and wonder about us.... and most likely sell tickets so others can wonder too.
