OK, so I'm sure I just made nearly everyone in Reno cringe lol Reno 911 portrays Reno-Sparks as such a run down place, and since I've only visited Las Vegas, as most have, it's easy to assume that of any Nevada city. Does the show appropriately portray Reno? Not the people of course, but the actual look of the community. Is there a lot for tourists to do or is it just a gamblers paradise? How is the shopping for a tourist? Looking through the pics I can't believe how green Reno is! Does it snow there? So many questions!! Sorry guys, but I really appreciate it!
PS- Any good gay bars?

hello

This link may be of use to you Gay Reno - travel, hotels, bars only it doesn't mention La Bussola, which is run by two wonderful women, Meredith and Dawn, and also Salon 7 run by Jenny O. Both places do a lot of activities for the GLBT community.

I have never been to any of the bars, but have done a lot of stuff with La Bussola and Salon 7 with my artwork, and I always have a great time with the folks at those two places. Maybe someone else on this board who is GBLT can better answer your questions for you, and tell you which clubs are best, I am just coming from an artist stand point who was lucky enough to show with La Bussola and Salon 7.

For me, I don't think Reno is green at all, but, I lived on the East coast. It's funny, my husband and I were just saying on Saturday how we expected to see more cacti here, but you don't see any.

Run down? Hmmmmm, I have seen a lot worse and a lot better, I think they are working on making downtown Reno nicer. I don't personally like certain areas of Reno/Sparks, they look dingy and dirty, but you get that every place.

Nothing beats going down town at night, when its dark, and driving through the streets and seeing all the flashing neon. I am sure LV is better, but I have never been. Reno has its own quaint charm.

Shopping, I dont shop downtown, only the regular places which I presume is like anywhere else.

You do know Reno 911 was thought up when a producer came to Reno and had a run in with the cops here, so he decided to make Reno 911 to get back at them. Personally, I think law enforcement here is a joke, and seems a little corrupt. There is soemthing wrong when a cop thinks he can ride his motorcycle up and down the sidewalk givcing traffic tickets, when he is obviously breaking the law himself!! Go figure!

It does snow in Reno - but it doesn't last long. It gets windy in the afternoons. There are run down places in Reno , like any other city. 4th St. area East to Sparks is less attractive. The South side is growing rapidly with shopping centers that reach to the Mt. Rose Hwy.

Reno is not very green The Truckee River helps but the area is high desert. Dry heat - less humid.

Living there, you rarely venture onto the strip. The tourists tend to remain in that area. Locals tend to avoid the tourists.

The college is North of the strip - older section of town/houses, decent until you hit the industrial area.

Sparks has some nice stuff going on. The Rib Cook Off & Hot August Nights are fun - wouldn't want to live there. Nicer (housing) areas are on the edges of Sparks. The lake is a nice walk.

I have no idea about the bar scene - never been a fan. Sounds like Handitak has the scoop on that one.

Someone posted some great pix of the area here in City-Data. You would probably find it in a search for "Reno photos"

I haven't been to a bar in 3 years, which includes the year and a half I have lived in Reno. Google is a wonderful tool, hence how I found the link I provided to the GLBT life in Reno.

La Bussola is a gift shop, and Salon 7 is a hair salon, neither of which are bars/night clubs/drinking holes. Yes, both businesses are ran by lesbians, who are wonderful, kind, women, and both businesses do a lot for the art community, as well as providing lots of events for GBLT. Google them. Being an artist and having shown my work with them both, thats how I know about them, and I am proud to be affifliated with them both.

Hope this clears up any confusion. I am just a work from home fine artist and a Mum of 4, I have no scoop on the bar scene here at all -- sorry -- I just use google.

I hope someone else can answer the club/drinking questions for BreaOC -- or you could always email La Bussola or Salon 7 and ask the girls for help. You can find them by googling them.

Sorry -
It was not my intension to imply that you were personally involved in the Reno Bar scene. Just that you seemed to have the right direction for research on the subject.

My apologies...

Thats Ok, I just didn't want people to think Im some club hound -- ha ha -- I really dont have much info to offer on the club scene here in Reno. Same with places to eat, we only ever go to Olive garden because our 3 yr old has severe food allergies.

I looked at the picture thread, it looked beautiful Las Vegas as a whole (outside of the strip) seems incredibly run down. I was happily surprised to see older buildings in Reno, definitely don't see that in Vegas! My partner and I are always looking for new places to visit, and Reno came up the other day. I assume the casinos in Reno have shows like the ones in Vegas? Is there shopping in the casinos like in Vegas? Uh no I started the questions again LOL.
After some research, it would appear laysayfair was correct, thank you for that laysayfair! It would appear that most of it is shot in the cities of Carson, Sun Valley, and North Hollywood in our San Fernando Valley. Which in it self embarrasses me that we have run down areas like that LOL. So the guy that came up with the revengeful show must have really wanted to make Reno and it's sheriffs department look bad wow!

Where on earth were you? Las Vegas, outside the strip, is a number of things...but run down ain't on that list.

There are some beat up areas just off the strip but Las Vegas is basically vast stretches of reasonably new housing once you get away for the central city. In bad taste maybe...but not beat up.

My apologies, I get a lil defensive when people say the LA area is run down and ask myself the same "where were they??" statement. I was referring to the northeastern part of the city of Las Vegas surrounding the 15 freeway. Vegas seems to have very rough areas around the majority of the 15 until you reach the strip. Las Vegas has some great area's, I visit frequently due to it's proximity to Los Angeles. I at a time was very tempted to move to Henderson. But I am finding myself curious to Reno, having been to Vegas so many times already, hence my questions regarding a visit
