If they skipped on 1 months left on a lease then they owe you for 1 month
They skipped on paying the last months rent and ten days after it was due, they sent me a letter saying they did not intend to continue renting. The lease required a 30 day notice, so they owe for another months rent beyond the expiration of the lease. The lease automatically converted to a month-to-month rent at the end of the first year.
Was there anything you could have done about it when they didn't pay last month's rent? e.g. did you have their security deposit?
I have retained the damage deposit, the lease specifically says it cannot be used for rent, it is intended to cover damages not rent, but is forfeited if they leave owing rent. The deposit was less then the amount of the monthly rent so did not cover that much less the damages and cleaning that was necessary.
OK I have a general question (to anyone): before you take your LL or tenant to court, do/should you give them a warning to let them know your intention?

If you are required to by law yes. If not, then no, if they are expecting a lawsuit it will be more difficult to serve them. You should remind them of their obligation to but not necessarily that you intend to sue.
Evictions and damages for tenants who left the place in distress.
Even if I never collect any money I know they will have a hard time getting a new decent place or a loan......That makes my day brighter and worth the money I had to spent in court.
Gee you sound like a nice person. LOLOL...
