So I was just talking a gal who was looking for a place to rent on Craigslist and found what she thought was a great place. She emailed the person who listed it and got a response immediatly with more pictures and the info she asked for. Well she wanted to rent the place right away so the "landlord" informed her he needed to run a "credit" check. He sent her a form to fill out with name, dob and her credit card number.
Your thinking no she couldnt be that stupid... but since he said he needed a "credit" check she thought it was part of that information and gave the Credit card, expiration and code on the back on the card to this "landlord".
Surprise... he never got back to her again and started buying stuff online and having it sent overseas..
Stupid stupid stupid is about all I could tell her. She cancelled the card and notified the Credit Card Company but we will just have to wait and see if her 'lesson' costs her anything....
I don't think she is responsible for fraudulent purchases... I think the vendors will have to take a loss... Even though she wasn't exactly careful with her personal information, I don't think she is at fault for OBVIOUS fraudulent transactions... her credit card have a monitoring system for that, and if they fail to detect big purchases OVERSEAS, that's their fault... they need to confirm with her before these purchases are completed... I was once a victim as well... went to a local restaurant, used my credit card, and apparently this restaurant would sell credit card numbers to China... got a phone call the very next day that someone was trying to use my credit card number in China for a $5000 purchase... obviously it wasn't me, so they declined the transaction and sent me a new card...
Her stupid, stupid, stupid mistake should not cost her anything.
Credit Card companies LOVE charge-offs because they can take it right out of taxes.
It may take a week or so for the CC company to square things off, but she won't have to pay anything.
