My lease started march 30 2012 the lease was for 13 months but it states the lease ends 5/31/2013 which in my calculations is 14 months. 13 months should have been April 30 2013. Normally not an issue but I recently purchased a house and have my first mortgage payment due may 1st. My landlord keeps telling me no that the lease is correct. Am I liable for this extra month of rent? Am I just not seeing this the correct way? Any help would be appreciated thank you.

You're liable for the contract you signed.

I agree with you as far as the dates for a 13 month lease, but the contract should have the actual dates in your lease term. What lease termination date is on your lease contract?

Lease terms say 3/30/2012 beginning. 5/31/2013 ending. Then right next to it says 13 month lease which is what I was signing for.

If you read it as 4/1/2012 and ending 5/31/2013, it is a 13 month lease. You do not count March, that was one day. April to April is 12 months and May makes it 13 months. Your reading it wrong. I hope that helps. Your obligated for May 2013.

April though April is 13 months. April through March is 12 months. The OP is correct with the dates being 14 months, the landlord probably counted wrong and did not do it to mess with you or anything but that is how long they are expecting you to be there, by the date, not the month count.

You can draw them a picture of the months with number under them or something and maybe they will realize the confusion and help you out.

This is something you should have noticed and brought up when you signed the lease.
