I am renting a house where it faces west. Starting mid day, our front door gets EXTREMELY hot, to the point you can't even touch the door handle. I can't really find anything on amazon, but does anyone have anything renter friendly we could install to either a) block out the sun from the door handle or b) put over the door handle to make it manageable to touch?

There is a wood door with a metal bulb handle, and then a glass door with a lever style handle also metal.

Look online at door canopies. I've been looking at the same thing and there are hundreds available from different manufacturers in different price ranges. A simple frame holds up a canvas canopy and all you need do is drill a couple of holes above and to the side of the door which you can fill in if you decide to take it with you when you leave. Ask your LL's permission first, of course!

Our front porch is already covered but since it faces west, the sun just beats directly to our door The front porch is covered out about 4-5 feet.

OK, got it. Switch out the door handle for a wooden one - should be simple enough. Or keep a pair of insulated oven gloves hanging on a hook by the front door!

Any ideas where to find wooden one (if the landlord goes for that)? I looked briefly at Lowes the other day when I was there, but no wooden doorknobs with a lock.

For the round door knobs, you can try doorknob covers. They're made for keeping kids from opening doors, but will work to insulate against heat. For the levers, you could use clear tubing to slide over the handles. Inelegant, but better than burning your hands all the time.

Also, there is shade screen, which you may or not be able to hang in front of your door, depending on HOA & landlord rules.

Get a cool knitted door handle cover from etsy. In our town people have gone crazy knitting parking meter covers, tree limb sweaters, banana protectors, etc. a door knob cover should be easy to score.

You know, i never thought about trying to knit or crochet my own covers. I'll give that a try since I have everything here. Thanks for the idea!

How about buying one of those automotive stick-on "shades" that they sell for vehicles. They stick on with a suction cup and they come in various sizes. They are that black stuff with see-through holes. Sometimes you will see them on the side/rear window when there's a baby in the car.

You can place it on the inside of the glass storm door. It should block the sun enough the drop the temperature a lot. Then when you move out you take it with. I bet they have nicer/larger ones at RV supply stores where you can maybe fit your entire door with one. A company that does window tint for cars might have access to something that will work for you and is also tempy where it can be removed upon move-out without causing damage to the door.

Here is a link to a small one at amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Brica-Smart-Sh...A4C9GWNER3K4MS

Here's something used for storm doors:
