Being a college student, I don't want to sign a lease and be obligated for my roommates when someone can not pay rent. There are individual leases but a lot of the companies around here do not do that and I found a nice house that is a single lease. Is there a legal way I can create a contract between my roommates that splits up the responsibility of rent. Basically so the landlord does not come after me. Whether it is the roommates parents or someone else. I know the lease contract allows the landlord to come after me, but can my contract allow me to go after my roommate? You can (only with the permission of your landlord) enter into sublease agreements with roommates but you remain the prime leaseholder and entirely responsible for the lease. If any of your subtenants default on payments to you or on any other terms of your agreement, you can certainly take them to court (and evict them in your position as their landlord) but you still remain responsible for everything they do where your LL is concerned.
Why don't you just look for a single unit you can afford and avoid all that hassle?

Yes, if you have a contract with your roommates, you can go after them, sue them in small claims court, etc. But many landlords will tell you that even with a court judgement against someone, it is often difficult to get them to pay you what they owe. Your best bet would be to have an adequately large deposit from them to help you cover any loses.
