People pay every day, all the time, for many different things with cash and they get what is called a 'receipt', which is proof.
Totally different. Walking into the store and buying something with cash is not the same as being handed cash outside on the street. Hopefully the LL had the OP sign something to acknowledge that everything has been resolved, but I would still want more then just a piece of paper saying I gave someone $300. I would want a copy of the money given, which is what a check would be. Especially when the person has not been acting rational and threatening to sue well before the time frame the LL has to return any money owed.
