I dint think it's anyone's business what someone wants to charge. If they cant rent it it means they overpriced themselves . If it rents it means someone could afford it.

Did you bother to read the article? He didn't move in and then it was hiked, he said he was there for "a long time"

There is no mention on if there is a lease or month to month. Based on the facts in the article seems month to month. The LL gave notice and he didn't move or pay. So not sure what makes you think the tenant has a chance.

So he got a good deal for a long time and now the "slumlord" wants market value. What's the issue?

Must be more to the story...

SF has a vast amount of residential rentals that are covered by rent control...

So why is this one not?

Based on what some people have been commenting on other links about this story, it seems as if this guy never signed a lease with the landlord.

He was subleasing from the primary leasee, one of his roommates, and that person happened to move out.

So something else is going on here that we're not getting the full story.

My thinking is that this guy complaining refused to sign a lease because he only wanted to pay what he and his roommates were paying, $1800, so the landlords probably wanted to get rid of him.
