Why do you need a scanner and printer? Aren't you listing on eBay? A phone with a camera would do the trick.
Who can afford a phone with a camera when rent consumes more than half my income? Also, I've seen eBay photos posted by sellers with phone cameras and the quality is subpar. I had planned to get a smartphone but the unexpected displacement made me put that on hold until I got my housing sorted out, and now I know my rent is too high to afford a smartphone.
Actually I have an all-in-one now, so I have scanner and printer in one device.

Yes, I have one now, but I still need a table sufficiently large for it. The tiny table included in my room is large enough for a laptop and a desk lamp - and that's it.

You don't have a floor? A small TV tray type table? You can't move the laptop and use that table?
I use a plotter to earn extra income, and put it on a tiny fold-up table that I bought at Goodwill.
We are trying to determine to see if we should join the party. Our friends who have rental properties all tell us to not rent to section 8 tenants because of the high risks. Is this true?
In most places section 8 vouchers are hard to get and keep. If they lose them they are then homeless or have to find somewhere else to live. If they are dumb or have so many problems that they don't care if they have a roof over their head then they may be a problem, but otherwise they shouldn't be. I know in many areas there is a waiting list just to apply for one. So you would not even be able to apply when you need it and then you get on the waiting list which can take a year or more.
Also you can do background check on them, if their credit is awful or they have past evictions then don't rent to them.
Its so judgemental of people to assume all section8 people are bad and trashy. They just need help! Not all are bad people
While it’s possible that not every S8 applicant will be a nightmare, the overwhelming percentage of them that are makes renting to them a very risky proposition.

That's true some are just down on their luck or sick or elderly. Plus they have to qualify. People aren't just given free housing because they want it. Also they can have excellent credit but just not earn enough from pay or from social security to qualify for a decent place to live, but as long as they pay their bills their credit should be fine.

I will be the first to tell you that all of Section 8 tenants are not bad renters at all. But a large minority of people have ruined it for the rest of you section 8 renters. Why should a landlord have to suffer because of a bad tenant when setting the bar higher helps weed out bad renters?

They don’t have to. It’s a stupid talking point when people come on here and say “ most” or “ the majority” of section 8 tenants are bad or scum or whatever the particulr terminology used is.
Bottom line, it’s people who are mad they got burned by not properly vetting tenants. The LL didn’t get screwed because section 8 tenants are dirty, scum etc, they got screwed because they, for one reason or another, didn’t properly vet the tenant.
Ultimtely it’s easier to just blame the system or people when in reality the LL either chose to ignore warning signs in favor of a guaranteed rent check, or failed to do their homework.
