State law isn't uniform at all. In a lot of states, you can toss granny in the back of the pickup, dig a hole in your back yard, and toss her in. That's assuming granny didn't die of a contagious disease. A lot of states require refrigeration or embalming beyond 24 hours so you can't dawdle digging the hole. The thing that's pretty uniform is the paperwork part. Somebody has to be involved in the process who knows how to do the paperwork. A licensed funeral director in a lot of places. Register the death with medical certification for the death certificate. Shut off Social Security. Register the grave site with the town. Etc.
My mom is in a memory care place in Connecticut. Assuming she dies in Connecticut, I'll have her cremated there and transport the ashes to Massachusetts where the ashes will be buried. I purchased the grave site a few years ago.
