State law isn't uniform at all. In a lot of states, you can toss granny in the back of the pickup, dig a hole in your back yard, and toss her in. That's assuming granny didn't die of a contagious disease. A lot of states require refrigeration or embalming beyond 24 hours so you can't dawdle digging the hole. The thing that's pretty uniform is the paperwork part. Somebody has to be involved in the process who knows how to do the paperwork. A licensed funeral director in a lot of places. Register the death with medical certification for the death certificate. Shut off Social Security. Register the grave site with the town. Etc.

My mom is in a memory care place in Connecticut. Assuming she dies in Connecticut, I'll have her cremated there and transport the ashes to Massachusetts where the ashes will be buried. I purchased the grave site a few years ago.

My mother died in Florida and is buried in Illinois next to my dad. Both funeral homes, as was posted previously, handled it all. Picked her up at the airport, everything. Pretty seamless. Now then when my mother and father in law died, they were cremated in Arizona and then packed in with other "stuff" and traveled by car to Illinois where their urns are interred beside their infant son. Pretty seamless there too.

My wife's parents lived in Chicago and were both buried in KS. We have plots there and in IA where I was born. We will likely end up in IA since we do not want to be buried here in NV. There are other family members on her side that can use the ones in KS.

My mom died in Illinois and her final resting spot was in Wisconsin. We had her funeral mass in Chicago. Then my brother rented a cargo van and loaded her casket in there and drove to Wisconsin. Brought her to the funeral home there and they conducted the final burial service.
On the drive up my brother took my mom passed some of her favorite sites also.
