The only additional insight I can give you is don't pick a small town that doesn't have a large number of transplants from other parts of the country. Small towns tend to not be very welcoming to new folks. By my experience, I'd avoid NC, but Arkansas people are nice and tend to be very welcoming. NW Arkansas, Eureka Springs are very nice. Moutain Home is my pick in that area. Lots of folks from the midwest and Chicago.
