Yes, I follow the HuffPost, especially the Fifty blog as I've entered its memoir contest. But, this is a nice story with an interesting link to International living - Live, Retire and Invest Overseas. [with an annoying popup]. Belize certainly looks inviting. The original article is @ Expats Open Successful Hotel Business in Caribbean Belize | InternationalLiving.com

Oh yeah, they also posted this Novel Retirement Destinations: Literary Locales To Love

I used to read a blog about a husband and wife living in Belize. It didn't sound very appealing between having to go to Mexico to get medical care, roads being full of potholes and mud, army ants invading your house so you have to leave until the ants leave, needing at least one big black dog to protect your property from crime, and all of the other "primitive" conditions that he turns into jokes. The blogger has been there for years. He says he is happy but it is not for everyone. He relies upon friends in the USA to supply him with things that he cannot get in Belize. When I asked him what his plans were for long-term care/assisted living, he did not respond to my question.

We have visited Belize. In fact, we were married there. It is a beautiful and mostly unspoiled country, but it is still a third world country and that has to be factored into all decisions. It was interesting to see all the vacant beach homes for sale there. Our guide/driver explained that American ex-pats would buy, build, move down for retirement and then abandon the homes and put them up for sale within about 2 years. Most people became lonely for friends and family, or needed a more U.S. lifestyle. Seriously, we all think we'd like to snorkel/dive everyday, but even that after awhile becomes tiresome.

I visited Belize and stayed in a rental home for 2 weeks. I looked into retiring there. It is true that the medical care leaves alot to be desired. I dont think everyone has army ants. There are areas where you would need a dog and a chain link fence, but other areas that are safe. The thing I always wondered is, if I would be healthier just because of the lifestyle and foods available, so wouldnt have to worry so much about being near a heart hospital, etc!

I agree on the long term care comment--you would want to croak before you needed that!

But oh, it is SOOOOO beautiful there---if you are going to die you may as well die in heaven....

Remember that Venezuela and Argentina used to be attractive, now are seeing severe shortages, extreme devaluation of currencies due to government changes.
