Some will say "Right where I am," and that's understandable. But for those who may not want to live out their days right where they are now: Where do you imagine you would be most content just before leaving the known world...and what are some of the explicit features of that place (for you)? Is it doable for you, or just a fantasy?
I may die quickly at home. if I'm lingering with cancer I hope I can stay home right to the end. If I'm forced to a hospice I want my animals with me when I die and I want to know that they'll have a good place until I meet them again.
Ideally I would like to spend my remaining years in Belize. Love that place. Love the climate, the people, scenery, food, everything is ideal to me except for the medical care. I would never move there alone tho, because I would miss too many people here.
But I am not unhappy in MN, except when we have a winter like we just had, LOL!!
When I started looking at retirement places I started with FL - because I have always loved the ocean and water in general and always thought living within a short drive to an ocean would be ideal.
I couldn't afford CA so the Atlantic/Gulf coasts would have to be it. After so many bad hurricanes I gave up the idea and then thought if I can't live near an ocean then mountains would be my second choice. So having lived in CO I planned to go there. Life has a way of guiding you away from and toward different things.
I'll cut this long story short with I now I am feeling rather strongly that the ocean is once again calling me. I will know for sure in a week or so. If not, then I will move to Asheville.
I have never felt that MN was a place to retire, especially after this past/current winter. NEG - you are so creative - thanks for starting another thread - the others are getting so old.
Interesting thread. To Umbria, I say that hurricanes are over-rated as a problem, come on down.
We've been splitting time between the Midwest and the gulf coast of Florida for a few years; my bride has learned that her time is probably short so she is opting for more Florida. Why? Water, sunsets on the beach, birds fishing, fish jumping, dolphins, seafood, climate.
Left to my own devices (as I probably will be sooner or later), I would spend my time lots of places--splitting most time between the gulf coast and Midwest, but traveling to other places as well.
I'd like to live out my remaining years in a charming, funky beach cottage in...oh, let's say...Carmel or Monterey but the town would never be crowded despite the delightful bakeries, shops and restaurants.
I currently live on the Malecon in Miraflores overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I need to move to the USA for 20 years to put my kids through University but my wife and I will hopefully return to my adopted home when I hit 80 and she retires.
