I had a popup that said I had a virus and to call 888-732-8083. I was leery, but called the number & as usual, a foreign person answered. He said he would help me to get rid of it but needed certain information. I said I would think about it & get back to them.
Then I did a complete scan with the service I have & guess what - there was no virus detected. I'm updating everything to make sure I am fully and completely protected.
I don't know what those folks would have done to my computer but have to get the word out. I will post this on a media site also.

You should always just hang up on those people because it is a scam. The internet sub-forum probably would have been the best place to post this if looking for advice. On the other hand, since you want to get the word out, this forum is as good as any.

meo: I got "taken" by these people I am embarrassed to say. About a year ago I had just found out my sister was dying from cancer. I was not thinking properly when I got that phone call. It's a very long story, but I had to do a lot of work to get those people out of my computer. They can actually get into your computer and do whatever they want to in it. And charge hundreds of dollars to do it. My computer store helped me a lot; those people were going to bill me around $600+. I was glad to just pay the computer store, and call my credit union for new accounts.
Cost me a lot of money. But I finally learned the lesson.
Those are adware. You just close the window on your computer. It looks scary, but it's not real. I get them a lot, cruising around on the internet.
This is a very common scam. Some of these scams are more aggressive and will stop you from closing the window or shutting down your computer. Often, they persist in memory and every time you open that browser, the scam popup will take over. Some of these are faked to look like your computer's blue admin screen, some will have loud buzzers or sirens that can't be shut off. Those are very scary and irritating and are intended to panic you into doing something stupid - i.e. calling them or going to their website.
Do not call them. Do not go to their website. These scams are run by criminals (mostly overseas) who intend to get as much money as they can out of you. They also hope to steal your credit card and bank information. If you go to their website, or download anything, or allow them to take over your computer, they will install bad software to spy on you, steal passwords, and steal banking and credit card information. Sometimes they will install ransomware that will encrypt your computer until you pay a lot of money to get it back. Often, they keep the money and you never get your computer restored. So don't deal with them. Period.
If you are using Microsoft Windows and can't close the browser, remember that CONTROL-ALT-DELETE (all three buttons at the same time) will eventually pull up Task Manager. Task Manager will let you close a running task. Look for your browser (Explorer, Edge, Firefox, Chrome, etc) and shut down that browser as a task. You will need to get rid of your cache. You can do that from the browser or get other software that will do it for you (such as the free CCleaner) or some of your antivirus/security software packages.

If you are not technically inclined, and don't have a friend or relative to help you, you can take your computer to a legitimate repair shop. But, as long as you didn't go to the criminal's website, or download anything, or give them remote control of your computer you should be able to get rid of this yourself.
NEVER, EVER GIVE ANY INFO OR CLICK ON ONE OF THOSE THINGS !!!!! That is how people get their information stolen and get scammed. Every once in a while I get a popup with a siren and it says my computer is locked and I have to call a certain phone number. I just reboot my computer and it goes away. (Damn porn ! )
Years ago, when I was a new computer owner, I got an email from "Ebay" telling me my account was being suspended and they needed my personal information to reinstate me. Like a Dumbass, I did it and my Son jumped all over me. I had to close my Ebay account and my Paypal account too.
These guys have all kinds of tricks and they should rot in Hell.

Do a system restore.
I had a phone call from a company who said they were partners with Microsoft and told me my computer was filled with viruses and to allow them remote access so they could scan and remove virus. I told them no but they kept calling me until I got angry and the caller had the nerve to tell me not to call THEM anymore. Duh. Yes Indian call center.

Yes, that's a scam. I've had that popup before. I ALMOST fell for it, but then thought...wait a minute....my antivirus program doesn't have popups that look like that. And I wouldn't be getting a popup from anything else notifying of a virus. Even if I did, I STILL would get a popup from my antivirus, too. Which I hadn't. So I knew it was a popup ad to sell something, or even install a virus if I clicked on it.
It's pretty authentic looking.
My antivirus also talks to me at the same time it does a popup, so there's that, too. My threat popups from my antivirus program always appear in the lower right part of my screen. Not in the middle like the scammers.
