I was just curious as to what some of you did to celebrate your retirement? I assume my employer will throw some kind of get away party that I will be obliged to attend. Personally, I could take it or leave it.

I'd almost like to find something I'd like to do all on my own. I don't have any friends around. I haven't had a friend that I could hang out with since 1993. Any suggestions?. I do have son I could go do something with, but I don't know what it would be. My wife is kind of a killjoy, so that's not a possibility.

A thing at work on my last day, cake, a plaque, my supervisor pretending he will miss me as I him. That night at home I grilled a huge rib eye steak and had a couple Coronas. The next day I got up late, went to a matinee at the movies and just relaxed. That was celebration enough for me.

We more or less get to pick what we want to do when we retire.

With my years of service I was given a budget of $1500
I'm doing two luncheons, One in the Office I worked at for 1/2 my careers, the 2nd in where I spent 2nd half.

Some do Whole Building Party with cake/ice cream or a larger Buffet Breakfast or Lunch.

Some do Dinners.

Bought 3 bathing suits and moved to Hawaii after my husband retired.

Being military, had the standard ceremony. Read the orders, pinned on my medal, got my certificate of retirement, some other gifts, flowers. Had a cake and maybe regular food. Sheesh, can't remember!

Left the building, went to billeting, took off the service dress uniform, and got ready to hit the road!

It depended. If the administration liked the retiree there was a big dinner at a restaurant with people speaking. If they didn't then it was mentioned at the final staff meeting of the year and the retiree may or may not have received a plaque.

At work I was joined by about 20 coworkers and my boss. I was given a card and a 1.75 liter bottle of Kettle One vodka.

When I got home that last day of work, Mrs5150 threw me a surprise party. Bunch of friends and our Pastor and his wife. Got a small kick out of talking to him with a glass of wine in my hand.

The unit took me out to lunch at Fridays restaurant. There was a gift card for Target. When the lunch was over, they paired up and went back to the office and I was left leaving the restaurant by myself. I drove to Target and spent my $50 !!

On my last day I came in to work wearing a Hawaiian shirt & shorts in lieu of my regular business suit. We had both a party in the office, and a larger after-work party at a local watering hole later that day.
