There are a number of good strategies for IRA invested funds. Life insurance would not be near the best unless you are planning of final expenses. For some a fixed annuity might be of value.

Not to hijack the thread, but what becomes the "optimal" strategy if the desired rate of withdrawal is 0%, the goal is maximizing net-worth upon death, the time-horizon is infinite, but the risk-tolerance is very low?

The time horizon becomes infinite if we're investing for purposes of leaving a legacy, instead of personal consumption during retirement. And by "legacy" I mean things like getting one's name on a university building, or endowing a foundation. Not all of us have family, to whom to leave an inheritance.

the answer is then it is not you that you are investing for and what you can do has many choices including just going 100% equity's since it is your heirs lifetime and not yours that you are investing for if it is legacy money

one of the things folks do not look at enough when they plan is who are they planning for ? is it maximum income ? is it for maximum legacy money ? is it mostly for income but you will chance the legacy money ?

who you are investing for has to be the first choice you make because as the article points out you can't invest for maximum income and spending if legacy money is your goal , they are opposite

but in an integrated strategy with your own investing and an spia for an income base it can be extremely powerful as a planning strategy with rtax free money for the spouse and no rmd's .
