I'm going to retire in the next 5 to 10 years and I live near Philly so I want to relocate to a warmer climate. Most of my family and friends live in the northeast so the Florida weather may be great but I would prefer to live no more than a few hours away by car. I was thinking somewhere between Ocean City Md. and Virginia Beach Va. but I have considered the Outer Banks. Affordable housing in a smaller population is my goal and I would prefer bayside living over the beach. I hope to get some welcome advice so thanks to everyone.

I spent some military time in Norfolk, I much prefer the Florida climate. How many of your family and friends will still be there in 5 to 10 years?

Keep in mind that Maryland taxes pensions except for a very narrow exemption for some retired military.

Also, not much of Maryland left between Ocean City and Virginia Beach.

If you would consider going a little bit further south than Virginia Beach, look into Edenton, NC.

Pretty little town on the Ablemarle Sound just inland from the Outer Banks. A number of over 55 communities in the area, plus not expensive IMO if you wanted to just buy a single family home.

Its not south, but have you considered Delaware? Low cost of living, good tax profile and close to Philly and east coast. There are a number of waterside towns, some with very affordable houses. Wilmington is a dump but other areas are nice.

You need to look further south a lot further than Ocean City Md. if you want to beat the Winter weather. I don't think anything north of NC will fit that bill really.

I was thinking the same thing. Winter weather in OC MD isn't all that different from winter weather in Philadelphia.

I spent a very cold and very windy weekend down there one December. Weather was about the same as my neighborhood in Monmouth County NJ. I moved to Durham NC and while the weather is a lot better in the winter than the NYC Metro area it does get a bit cold now and again. Not bad though. For guaranteed heat in the winter months I think you need to head to Fla.
