Well, my dad at 91 doesn't have much money, but once a week (or every other week) he and the aunts and uncles all head out to the casino and play the penny slots. Dad brings $10-$20 for gambling and they all have a buffet lunch for $5-$7. So worst case scenario is $27 for an afternoon out and a meal - usually he comes out down a few bucks - he has won a little over $300 on his biggest day, but generally loses about $5 an outing to the machines. He (and I) view it as an entertainment expense. Some people like movies, he likes gambling.
Now, if he were betting the rent, or thinking this is how he will pay for retirement, or playing the dollar machines with his entire months pension, that is a whole different discussion...
I have yet to be at any casino that has 7 dollar buffet? I must be a crappy gambler on slots i can blow 20 dollars on penny slots in about 10 minutes.
I think getting to see the numerous entertainers who sing at casinos is a cool thing!
Many are great - and not mediocre. It has become commonplace for top-of-the-line entertainers to perform at casino venues around the U.S., both inside and outside.
And definitely not just out-of-favor entertainers.
I don't particularly like the atmosphere inside the gambling areas of casinos - but I like that entertainers sing and perform in the showrooms and arenas.
Do they still allow people to smoke while gambling and doing slot machines, poker, etc?

Did your relative have addictive personality before?
You're saying she was perfectly normal? Probably not since you said "diversion from life's problems".
My sister in law certainly did not have any addictive personality. She only drank in moderation and never smoked.
She had some tough time first taking care of my mother in law then of her ailing husband (he literally smoked and drank himself to death).
We knew that she was somewhat depressed and certainly lonely after her husband death. It came as a huge surprise to us to learn that she was addicted to gambling and lost so much money just by playing slot machines!
She went to gambling anonymous at our urging and seemed to have been cured of the addiction.
Never been to a casino,never will. My idea of fun isn't handing over my hard earned money to a machine or a card table where the odds are stacked incredibly high against me.
My barber and his wife go frequently and I hear all about it from him. He thinks it's the greatest thing ever and can't wait to go back.

I hadn't been to a casino for about 10 years & and enjoyed it when I finally did. It will probably be another 10 years before I go again. But it was fun.
As a retired person I have lots of time on my hands and like to visit the local casino and play blackjack and slots. I am in good company because most of the people I see at the casino are over 60 years old.
While I understand that few of the people on this board will admit that they like to go to the casinos, stats will tell you that most people you see playing slots are older folks. WHY?
I for one will never play mindless slot machines!

I had fun playing slots, but my clothes, hair all smelled like smoke and mouth/throat tasted like smoke. As soon as I got home, I took a shower, washed my hair, and laundered my clothes. The smell was powerful. Do all casinos allow smoking?

In Florida, every state-authorized casino (which constitute the vast majority of casinos throughout the state) are completely smoke-free. Only the few casinos on Native American land that are run by the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes allow smoking. This means that in South Florida, for example, which has a total of 13 casinos, 10 are completely smoke-free.

and in Minnesota all the casinos are owned by Native Americans and thus Minnesota does not receive one penny in taxes off the casino profits.
