I have a retirement date and it is December 23rd. I had wanted to work until the end of March but with having some health issues (not serious) I decided to pull the plug a little earlier. Financially, it does not make much of a difference and we will now sell our house and relocate a little sooner.
The company was surprised when I turned in my letter of resignation and I was surprised that they were, for some reason. At first I need to focus on getting the nagging health problems resolved and then I can get the house ready to sell.
I will be 63 in April, and it's time. I am tired of working and want to get on the next phase. I'll get social security, a pension, and with a modest monthly payment from my 401(k) we will be fine. Better than fine, actually.
This is both scary and exciting. I have looked forward to this for several years now and have every intention of making the best of it. Yay! I read this forum all the time and many of you have been really helpful, and I appreciate that.
Congratulations! Although it is a little scary, at least you know that it is time and are not struggling with the one more year syndrome or financial uncertainty. I'm in a similar position and am just waiting until next September when I turn 62 to retire.
That's awesome! Totally understand about the scary part. But if you are emotionally ready, no sense sticking around. Heal well and enjoy your 'free time'.
I want to retire 5/1/2020, 3 months after I turn 62. Thats 41 months away. Seems like a long time right now. Yet I can clearly remember the projects I was doing at work and around the house, in August of 2012 and it seems like just yesterday. WHY IS THAT???

I retired this year in March. I had always known that the day would come but I had actually been hoping for next September but last February I got the word that my military career would end last September. It was a shock to my office since my military career was tied to the full time job they were taken unawares too. We were just entering a phase where my expertise was going to be needed. So they set it up so that I got extended 180 days to end at the end of March.
Financially too it would have made a bit more for me to stay longer I had done everything that I had been told to do with regards to finances. We will have my two pensions and we each have a 401k to make ends meet on.
You will come to embrace it. Enjoy while you are able to. Life is too short not to.
This afternoon it got even better. I had originally said I would stay on until the 23rd but my boss came to me and said I could leave on the 9th, next Friday, and still get paid until the 23rd. It seems kind of strange, but I'm not going to argue with them. It just means I have less time to get my projects in order and ready to hand-off to the next person, but it's not a problem.
This is actually good because I have some follow-up doctor visits coming up. Now I can make them without stressing about work. Christmas is going to be good this year.
