I will be going up to the Olympic Peninsula with my truck in a few weeks to help a relative move, and was looking at the ferry schedule. Until now I didn't realize that there is a senior discount for the driver portion of the fare, 50% off at age 65. I will hit that milestone in about a week, so I'll be able to take advantage of it.
We've had AARP for years now, and it gives us a lot of senior discounts, some quite a bit and some ho hum.
When we do eat out, we like to eat at our local Denny's diner and we get 15% off our tab with our AARP card, for instance.
Hotel discount may only be $5, but hey that $5 can go in the retirement fund, as AARP can be joined at age 50.
If we ask for "the AARP discount" and they don't have one but have a senior menu, we are often given that menu instead, even if the senior menu specifies age 65!(we are still in our 50s, just barely left in the 50s for my OH, but I'm also well into my 50s).
We look forward to my OH turning 62 in about 3 years to see what more age-provable discounts or services we can get.
Except for health issues, we are really starting to enjoy the beginning of our "golden years"!
Bless all of us who have aged so well.
AARP opens a lot of doors that really would be closed you simply by whipping out the card.
Heat wave on the Olympic Peninsula Hemlock, low 70's possibly reaching---80 ! Be sure to check the weather ! Raised in Oakland, moved from Concord, weather there 100, mid 90's !
Oak Table for breakfast, lunch in Sequim or Chestnut Cottage for breakfast, lunch in Port Angeles for your kindness in moving.
When I first started to become eligible for senior discounts I never took them, as I felt that they are rather pointless, i.e., that there is no particular reason for offering them other than that the competition does (other restaurants, etc.). But finally I said "what the hell" and started using them. I am a natural cheapskate and I suppose that side of me finally won out.
We used to take the Pierce County ferry from Steilacoom to Anderson Island, where we owned property. Husband always got the senior discount.
It added up!
