I don't think it's the nurses or CNA's. I think they are so short staffed beyond reason.
I worked in HC for 20+ yrs. (What I am about to post is not intended to be political, it's a fact). Before Clinton pushed HC reform, we had the time needed for providing good and caring patient care, in HC, many times you don't get second chances. We also had the time to talk with the patients instead of racing around. After all isn't the patient what it's supposed to be all about? When HC reform was debated, Hospitals changed from patient centric to insurance centric and it hasn't changed back since. The nurse to patient ratio (unrealistic), everyone was tired and stressed. Shift work is also hard on the body.
I'll never forget wondering why this one guy I worked with was not stressed. After observing him, I realized he was no longer stressed because he was pushed far enough he just stopped caring (no he wouldn't hurt anyone). While the stressed out staff still cared. but I also cared about my own health so I knew it was time to get out. I've been out for about 10 yrs and I'm glad I did. I'm still friends with ex co-workers and they say it's even worse, how that's possible I don't know.
This is not to say hospital staff don't give the best care they can.
