We put lights outside on the house and decorate the tree inside. I have ornaments from 40+ years, keeping my favorites over the years, adding and subtracting. The grandkids and I make some kind of ornament each year to give as gifts.

This year we found out there are Lego Christmas Village sets. We are in the midst of building the train, and memories, with each brick. For those of you who saw the Lego Movie, I considered using Kragle to keep them together! I came to my senses and I'll just have to accept that missing pieces will happen as the years go by.

We both had easy-going families who never put holiday demands on us and our Christmas memories are of a magical, happy time of year and it continues. My DIL loves Christmas and has been told the Elf movie cannot be watched until after Thanksgiving. I raised a holiday curmudgeon! How did that happen?

Our decorating will be down this year. Outside is usually done with some lights around the handrails and the door, balls in the 2 larger trees and one of the moving lights against the house. May or may not put up the inside tree. I had major surgery 2 weeks ago and won't be up to a lot, plus DD/SIL bought their first house this year and wants to have the holidays up at their place. It's a 6 hour drive so we will be there for about a week or so. No one else coming to our house. I had a neighborhood open house the last 2 years but not this year.

In the old days - Santa and Reindeer out front - lights gingerbreading the house - a lighted star on the roof. The inside was decorated top to bottom but the kids are older - we don't entertain and the most I do is put up a 3 ft tree and decorate it - not with the 4 totes of Hallmark we've collected over the years but generic balls and candy canes.

I love the essence of Xmas but the decorating part - not so much because what I put up - I have to take down!

First 18 years of Christmas were traumatic, never knew what shape Dad would be in.

When I got married and saw how other people did Christmas, I started to enjoy it.

When I divorced and alone, I did a little decorating, not much. My son had moved out of state. My daughter went to her father's (she told me spending Christmas with me would be too boring).

Christmas as most Americans celebrate today is so commercial, I've come to hate it. I try to focus on the meaning of Christmas. When I've seen children's room so packed with toys I wonder why we do that to them. Oh, I think I know the reasons. But I don't agree with it and I think it's a tragedy.

I like another poster's idea.... vacationing in Hawaii.

Yes, Christmas can be very commercial but you don't have to give into that. It means something different to everyone. Some don't celebrate it or even like it but that's cool. My kids are all older now so I don't buy them gifts any longer. I just told them I will make them something in my Art room

Anyone on here ever watch the movie "Scrooged"? (with Bill Murray) His speech at the end is what Christmas means to me.
We all should be kinder to each other and help each other out when we can.

For over 20 years we put up an 11 foot Christmas tree with over 5,000 lights added by hand and hundreds of old world blown glass ornaments. It was my favorite time of year. Now I'm alone (kids are grown, ex is out of the picture) and I don't as much as light a candle. It feels as though there is really no point.
