I'm B +, and I used to donate blood on a semi regular basis, but due to medical/Rx issues, I no longer can.

My late husband was a universal donor, and had/didn't have something that made his blood hard to find and could be used for infants, he donated regularly as often as was allowed.

I used to serve in an Army Reserve unit after I left active duty. We regularly donated as a unit. One time a bunch of us were in the cookie/coffee/juice room after donating. Another unit member walked in, and we noticed blood dripping down his arm. All my fellow vets froze. I got up, put my finger in the ****, so to speak, and walked him back into the collection room. No big deal to me (or to the guy bleeding) but it was to the rest of the group! Go figure.

B flavor.

Rh factor (+ vs. -) unknown because all they stamped on army dog tags in the 60s was the basic flavor without any other details.

I'll be 80 this year, and in all my years, I've never heard, even once, a public announcement that any blood was needed. I also presume that if such an announcement is made, there will be more than enough response to it without me.

I used to donate a lot. I'm AB positive & would get called when my blood was needed as I was a regular donor.

One time they used two smaller bags, which I thought was unusual so I asked why & was told my blood was going to twin babies who desperately needed it. That felt good.

I haven't donated since my back operation. Not sure why. I may have to check into it again.

I donate often. My late DH used a lot of packed RBC during chemo. I can give back so I do.

Well, maybe since you're 80, your memory isn't what it used to be. Or maybe since you live in a far off island nation, you don't get much news there. In any event, let me help you out a little.

Here's a public announcement made by the Red Cross last December in Omaha, Nebraska:

Red Cross asks for blood donations over holiday season

And here's a public announcement made by the Red Cross this past February in Savannah, Georgia:

The American Red Cross is facing a blood shortage and is asking for donations

And here's a public announcement made by the Red Cross last month in the small town of Rensselaer, Indiana:

Red Cross asking for blood donations from locals | Local | newsbug.info

And here's a public announcement made just yesterday in Chicago:

Red Cross Asks for Blood Donations This Spring

Oh, and here's a public announcement from last year where the Red Cross asked specifically for people with Type O Negative and Type AB blood to donate due to a severe shortage:

Shall I go on? Or are the links that I have provided sufficient enough for you? [mod cut - no need to be rude]

I've heard them plenty of times. After 9/11 and other catastrophes, and locally when supply is just running low.

But if everyone felt this way and just presumed/waited for someone else to donate, no one would be donating!

That would have made him type O, Rh negative.
