Do retired postal workers get death benefits after they retire. If so, how much?

Just quoting this in case the police need the evidence in the future.

This post reminded me to change my beneficiaries. I have over $500k in life insurance. I asked the Mr if he would remarry if i died young. He said yes without hesitation!

I am not leaving him too much money so that he and the new Mrs. Can ball out on my death benefits.

Let me explain further. My Aunt, who was a postal employee, died from Alzheimer's recently. The family does not know what kind of death benefits she is, or not, entitled to.

Contact the post office where she was working. Have the next of kin ask HR

No, the local post office wouldn't be able to assist at all. As with most other federal agencies, once an employee retires, their files are transferred to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in Boyers, PA and OPM handles all pay and benefits issues, with the exception of the Thrift Savings Plan, which is handled by the TSP Service Office in New Orleans. Here is contact info for both OPM Retirement Services & TSP:

If you mean life insurance, it depends on what level of coverage the employee selected. It's not one size fits all. After retirement, the benefits further differ according to a pre-set package that is chosen as part of retirement benefits. OPM is the only agency that would have the details on each individual.

A beneficiary also has to be specified. If the beneficiary has also passed away, then the estate of the employee would be the beneficiary.

All correct. And the folks at the OPM are extremely helpful. My father was a retired letter carrier and passed last year. He had a life insurance policy and the OPM assisted in getting that paid out promptly.

Why wouldn't you call the post office personnel or human resources or simply ask your postman? You "might" get an accurate response from an anonymous online forum.
