Sad story... Also, reminder of how much/little control unmarried couple might have late in life...

"It was a journey that appeared doomed from the beginning: An octogenarian couple, one spiriting the opposite away from a residential care house in a white Mazda pickup, the breadth of the treacherous Australian outback laid out earlier than them.

Interesting story, but it was either written by AI or run through Google translate without proofing. Lo, the future of journalism.

"Someday earlier than New 12 months’s Day..." Do you think they mean sometime before New Year's Day?

The situation was in Australia. Maybe it's a colloquial phrase.

The whole article reads like that.

About all I could do was get the gist of this strangely written article. It read almost like a translated Japanese operator's manual.

Australian law sometimes seems strange to us Americans. I prefer our laws.

My apologies! The problem is with the article outside the paywall. NY Times article has more information and was written by Natasha Frost. Natasha Frost who writes the Europe Morning Briefing and reports on Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific from Melbourne, Australia. The NY Times article is well written.

Since every time I post the NY Times link, someone will complain about the paywall, I did a quick search and saw something that seemed identical and put in the link with least amount of pop ups and ads. I did not fully re-read the non-paywall version of the article before including that link.

It's almost like it was written in a foreign language and then translated back into English by a translation program. It's a sad story, but it doesn't sound like he was capable of caring for her, especially not on an extended road trip through dangerous country.

Can someone just give the gist of the story?

Is it "An old married couple went out in the wild not-green yonder and one or both died though it could have been prevented had they not gone an an off-road trip" kind of story?

But it was so fun to read the strange translation!

Sad story: 2 unmarried 80-somethings took a road trip through the Outback (no, not the steakhouse like I pictured them dashing through ) They had some dementia issues. Then they died within days of each other, later, after they were rescued. Amirite?
