........I guess a few were still around when I was a teen but they were almost invisible in the age of fast-food burgers. They disappeared quietly, like the lightning bugs we used see back then too but no more.
THEN THERE IS HOPE!.........for I see lightning bugs all the time.
Yes; not just for the food and convenience, but for the ambience assuming people sat down to eat instead of rushing out the door with the stuff. Mostly I'd just like to live in a place that would HAVE an automat.
The problem automats had to fight was fast food. Instead of a nice sit down lunch, it's race to the ff joint, order, grab. race back to job and gulp it down in 12 minutes.
It was a more leisurely time when millionaire was the word and garnered attention, like movie stars.
Yup - sometime right before Covid hit (probably 2019ish), I remember almost this exact same kind of setup being put in at my workplace - it was quite popular...I loved being able to quickly grab a snack or meal on a whim during the workday.

Just today I forgot to make and bring a lunch to the office, so I bought a frozen cheeseburger. It was surprisingly good, 1/4 lb. on a sesame seed bun. I may go down for an ice cream bar later before I go home.
(Don't tell my wife)
We had those self serve kiosks at my old office too. And at airports they now have kiosks you can scan your card to enter, grab whatever you want and walk out with no checkout.
So I guess we can concluded that "automats" have indeed "returned."
Watched a cool documentary on HBO Max. Mel Brooks said he once paid $35 for a cup of coffee and it wasn't
as good as the 5 cent Horn and Hardart coffee he used to get at the Automat.
I think you ment .35 cents.
It'd be nice for a cuppa joe and a slice of pie.
