I was raised in Rhode Island and although I haven't lived there for more than 30 years, it's still home to me and I would like to return.
I am a single, professional woman who is looking to comfortably support myself on a salary of $50K/year. When I look at the rents in Rhode Island I seriously wonder if that's possible.
I would prefer to live in a more rural area if any of them still exist.
There's lots of affordable housing in Rhode Island! The rule of thumb is that you shouldn't spend more than 30 percent of your salary on rent. At $50k a year, that's about $1,250 a month. But I've heard that rule isn't very helpful, so let's say you spend 20 percent instead. Now you're down to about $830 a month. You can absolutely find a rural one-bedroom apartment for that price. (Unless you were looking for a single-family home?)
I don't know what your definition of "rural" is and I don't know what Rhode Island was like 30 years ago, but here's the assessment of someone who's always lived in urban or suburban areas: There's a surprisingly high amount of areas I'd consider rural in this state considering it's the second-densest state in the U.S., but I don't think there's anything that would be considered rural by, say, Tennessee standards. Burrillville is the town most commonly cited as "country," but even there you're never really that far from stuff.
Well, since Rhode Island is so small, it doesn't really matter where I live. The furthest northern part of the state would be a bit of a haul since I intend to work in East Greenwich.
I just need a single family home, nothing large. It would need to have accommodations for a washer/dryer, fit a king size bed and allow for one well behaved dog.
That being said, I would ideally prefer to live in South County than in the northern part of the state.
Cleo, if you haven't lived here in 30 years, it does matter where you live because of the increased traffic! If you want to rent in south county, look at rentals in south county.
Rental rates across the country have risen because fewer first time buyers are buying due to banking crisis and tighter mortgage regulations. Adding to that is that RI housing stock is low- little new housing is built- land is expensive. South county is also a big tourist area and rents are generally high there. You might look away from URI in places like Burdickville, Carolina, Shannock, Hopkinton, Wyoming, etc. You may also see fewer seasonal rentals there.
Look on Hot Pads & RILiving.com. Maybe forget the king sized bed. Old houses often don't do king sized beds.
According to Zillow, the median rent price in Rhode Island is $1,650.

Any suggestions?
Warren, maybe? It's been steadily improving over the last 20 years, and it is next to rich towns like Bristol and Barrington. Live next to the ocean! Easy access to I-195 (connecting to I-95 and Rt. 24). Nice restaurants are popping up all the time. Colt State Park. It used to be horrible, but it might be the best value in that area of RI now.

Warren is pretty awesome. Love it there, and I find myself in town frequently even though I don't live nearby. It's got the most exciting restaurant scene in the state, for one thing.
