"Conventional wisdom says public housing has been - and will remain - an unmitigated disaster. People think of high-rise buildings filled with fatherless black welfare families, some of the most dangerous spots on this continent - places like Providence's Chad Brown, Chicago's Robert Taylor Homes, New York's Fort Greene and St. Louis's infamous Pruitt-Igoe.
But it need not be so. Spotted around the country, rarely publicized, are public-housing and other heavily subsized projects that are quietly and humanely doing their job for people of all races."
Wow thanks for posting that article, redplum. Definitely a good find. I didn't realize CHAD BROWN was so famous (or infamous for that matter).
But what is Valley View Homes? In North Providence???

Valley View was what is now Sutterfield (and/or Maplewood Terrace) and it's actually in Providence, not North Providence. It's in Wanskuck - on the Elmhurst line and on the North Providence line.
I consider Sutterfield and Maplewood Terrace to be the same, as they are connected, but I guess they technically aren't the same. These are the projects on Admiral Street (General Street, Middle Drive, East Drive, West Drive, South Lane, etc.)

That's a HORRIBLE place now. What a shame. I guess a similar trajectory to Roger Williams.
I'd argue it's not that bad. Crime does happen there, but it's just not a scary place like Chad Brown. I'd also say that every street in South Providence is far worse.

I get that it's not on the level of CHAD BROWN or HARTFORD, but it's very much the "projects" isn't it? I mean it's had quite a few shooting/stabbing incidents over the years.

It's definitely the projects and crime ridden, but never really felt intimidating like some of the others.
Wanskuck has gotten much worse, so maybe this place has also. I don't know.
In case the golf cart full of maintenance items next to him isn’t enough of a clue, it’s pretty obvious he is out committing crimes
