Making money off of incarceration, off services to incarcerated facilities and people in the court system (places like Spectrum make big $$ providing services to people in the system with super expensive and low success rate rehab programs), the courts rake in their cut.... the scam knows very few limits. The rehabilitation programs are WAY WAY more expensive here and have much lower success rates then much of Western Europe.

There is an entire federal aid program for drug enforcement activities so departments can receive offsetting funding for officers time... heck, every yeah in the county I worked in while in Wisconsin local pds would get together and cut and burn "$XXXXXX" dollars worth of weed, when all they were doing is enjoying a day outside burning ditch weed leftover still growing wild from the commercial hemp industry of the early 20th century. Big inflow of $$ from the Feds for drug enforcement. It was all a huge joke that got played up in the local paper.

You want less crime and less addiction? Institute the cost effective programs that prevent people from ever start using in the first place (soooo much cheaper than locking people up). Remove the criminal element from the dealing, and the huge profits from it being illegally trafficked, get the mark up and the dealers out of the distribution entirely. Stop wasting money on programs that have never worked and never will work.

It's insane. But its about money and so called "values". Our society would rather pay more to punish people for having their lives go wrong, than reward them a little bit for doing things right or investing in encouraging people to be constructive. Totally insane.

My post was poorly worded and I should have reread before hitting send. Certain ideas got mashed together wrong

As far as the transfer of wealth/entrepreneur thing - all the people who went to jail for smoking or selling pot are now blocked from that profession. And those who didn't go to jail will still probably be blocked because it's a corporate game now and you need really deep pockets to enter it legally. So yes, that wealth was transferred to people who consider it just another investment and had no skin in the game previously. It could have and should have been life changing for a lot of people.

Plenty/most of them had "skin in the game" previously. They just didn't get caught.

Yes of course, the lamentable transfer of the fine young entrepreneur's "wealth". Which wealth. The wealth they made from selling an illegal drug? Money which they never put a dime back into society in the form of income taxes like the rest of us? Or the imaginary wealth that you've decided they had god-given right to as future legitimate sellers? Because...well....why shouldn't they be automatically anointed future weed merchants without any competitive process? Background check? Or regard to financial resources available? So money talks? In a capitalist society? And Uncle Sam wants his cut? Well welcome to real life in these united states. Do you have any idea how deep one's pockets need be to open a liquor store? A pharmacy? So "corporate" shouldn't be allowed to take over a lucrative racket because they didn't have previous "skin in the game"? Meaning, because they didn't previously sell it illegally? Marijuana is an FDA regulated drug now. What did you think the new process for merchant selection would entail? Here ya go kid, we heard you were pretty good on the street? If anybody but you is losing sleep over this, please feel free to weigh in.

Given the magnitude of the drug trafficking situation, and letter carriers being right in their pathway; you think there will come a time soon when they will be armed?

NBC 10 I-Team: Postal worker abducted at gunpoint by two masked men

https://turnto10.com/news/local/post...two-masked-men

"The NBC 10 I-Team has learned a United States Postal Service letter carrier was held at gunpoint during his workday, by two masked men looking for a parcel that allegedly contained drugs.
According to court documents, the letter carrier was abducted in Pawtucket at gunpoint on June 1 by two masked men, who forced the carrier into their car. The men then drove the employee to his own house in Pawtucket, so they could search the home, say court documents.

The victim told law enforcement that the masked men had asked about a certain piece of mail that had been delivered in May to a house on Melrose Avenue in Pawtucket. The men told the letter carrier they had been watching him. But when all three arrived at the carrier’s house, the victim did not have his house keys, so the men took him back to where they had originally abducted him.
The carrier told agents that the men were driving an older model gray sedan with “cracked leather seats.”"
4 drug suspects indicted in abduction of Pawtucket mail carrier

"PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Four of the five men arrested in connection with a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation are now charged with abducting a United States Postal Service worker at gunpoint back in June.
A federal indictment unsealed Thursday charges Alijah Parsons, 29, Irving Medina, 31, and Andres Garay, 35, all of Providence, and Edgar Medina, 36, of Johnston, with aiding and abetting a kidnapping, the office of acting U.S. Attorney Richard Myrus announced.
All four of those men plus Ronald Hall, 39, of Providence, also face charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and aiding and abetting the possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, according to Myrus’ office.
Additionally, Irving Medina was charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.
Prosecutors and police allege the group was shipping packages of cocaine from Puerto Rico to various addresses in Rhode Island.
Court documents show that on the afternoon of June 1, a mail carrier working in Pawtucket was forced into a vehicle by masked suspects in the area of Division Street. They were allegedly searching for cocaine they claimed was missing from a delivered package.
The suspects then drove the mail carrier to his home and interrogated him about the missing drugs, but when they realized he didn’t know anything about the cocaine and didn’t have his keys to get inside, they brought him back to his postal truck unharmed, according to the criminal complaint filed back in June."

Yesterday in Warren. Kickemuit Rd., my guess is this was near the Metacom Ave. end.

https://turnto10.com/news/local/poli...side-apartment

"WARREN, R.I. (WJAR) — A 911 call for a report of a smoke condition inside a Warren apartment building on Thursday led police to find a large number of drugs including 25 pounds of marijuana, and over $2,500 in cash. When Warren police and firefighters arrived at the apartment building on Kickemuit Road crews determined that the smoke was coming from a second-floor apartment.
Firefighters said while they attempted to vent the apartment, police officers and the second-floor tenant, Anthony Miranda, 31, went inside the apartment to assess any damage.
While assessing the damage officers saw several "large vacuum-sealed bags" allegedly containing Marijuana in plain view inside Miranda's apartment, according to police.
During the investigation, a large number of additional narcotics were also found in Miranda's apartment along with cash and scales.
