My college age daughters and I are going to be in Boston for a short vacation this summer.
We are flying home out of Hartford, CT.
I am wondering if it is worth the trip to go out of our way and spend a day in Providence or should we just spend the time in Boston?
We've never been to RI, so I really don't know what to expect from it.
Anyone care to weigh in on the issue?
Well, those of us who choose to live here think it's worth a day trip!!
You might drive down to see the historic East Side area which includes Brown University campus, the RI School of Design & it's art museum, walk the River Walk and if you have time, go see Federal Hill, the old Italian section with it's great restaurants and food shops. Providence is a smaller, much more relaxed version, of Boston; quaint, historic and (we think) very charming. If you had more than a day, I'd suggest Newport and the beach areas- a day isn't much to see this area.
Check out Providence's website- actually it has several. Look at some of Richard Benjamin's photographs.

Not to discourage you from visiting RI, but if you are on a "short" vacation, there's just a ton of history and other things to see in Boston.
If you are in RI this summer, I'd check out the beaches. The beaches on the Cape beat out RI, but no other MA beaches are as nice. Come see what the Ocean State was named for!

Nauset Beach is beautiful but who can swim in 50 degree water.
The only problem with the beaches on the Cape is the cold water as the
gulf stream doesn't go that way whereas..Rhode Island the ocean temperatures reflect the gulf stream.
I am a RIer who loves the Cape and go to Falmouth every year. I look forward to my vacation there every year.

Goto Boston! Providence is boring in comparison.
If you were to go anywhere in Rhode Island I would visit Newport.
Newport is certainly worth seeing if you have the time. Check out the photos that Verseau has posted in the sticky thread.
