Hi all.... I am moving to Richmond in the next month or so. I have been told that when I register my vehicles I have to pay personal property tax on them..... OK Don't have a clue what all this is about, in IN we don't do this. Can someone explain this to me....

what is it?
how can I estimate what kind of money I am going to need to have to register vehicles?
Do I have to do this every year??
Anything else I might not know and need to know... LOL

thanks all

Personel property is the most hated tax in Virginia! Every year the municipality you live in taxes your vehicles based on the book value of the car. For example the City of Richmond is $3.70 per $100 of assesed value for cars from 96-2010. Then we receive tax relief for vehicles valued at $20k or less, 60% of the money due is waved. Check out the bottom of this web page.
Richmond VA > Finance > Tangible Personal Property Taxes

Realise that the tax rate varies where you live. It is an annoyance but even with it we pay far less taxes than northern cities.

Thank you VA Yank... Ok quick question. The link you gave me talked about vehicles 1996 on... I have an older truck 1991, and then a newer jeep. So is that saying that I would not pay personal prop tax on the truck?

Thanks for your help!!!

I have a 94 truck and pay maybe $60 a year, It would be best checking with the tax office for an exact figure. Like I said before if your coming from up north even with the car tax we pay far less overall.

I dont think any county prorates anymore. So you may owe nothing in personal property taxes until next year in December.

They also give a deduction for high mileage (over 100K). When we first moved to the area, I had to scan and email a copy of a work order from the mechanic showing what the mileage was when it was serviced.

Chesterfield does on new vehicles. We received a bill from the county for three months of ownership at the end of 2009. Ouch!
