Hi! My family and I, ( husband and 2 young kids) are planning to relocate to the Richmond area this June. My husband will be working on the university campuses of Virginia and the Northern part of NC. I am a stay at home mom and my babies will be 1 and 2 years old. We are looking to rent at first. We would like a house with at least 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. I am looking for suggestions on where to look. We would like to be near Richmond but in a safe place . Suburbs are good as we are coming from a small suburb of Moorpark, Ca. We would also like to be close enough to things to do like stores/ parks/ museums/ etc... One thing I am concerned at is the crime rate that I noticed in Richmond. Moorpark is a super safe city. Any thoughts/ suggestions on where to look? What is a good rent amount? Thanks!!!

For Gods sake, get out of this move!!!! I am not exaggerating; Richmond is a hole!!!! Here's what you'll be moving into:

1. A wage scale that doen't begin to keep up with housing prices that are approaching DC level.
2. The worst public transportation system of any major city in the country.
3. Racism- From blacks as well as whites.
4. Crime- If you have any means; you'll have to decamp to the suburbs where you will have to have at least two cars (see #2)
5. A restaurant scene that is dominated by chains (hope you don't like German food; they don't have it here!!!)
6. No parks and recreation system to speak of.
7. The weather is bad three seasons out of the year (only fall is nice).
8. The natives are insufferably rude (and they can sniff out an out-of-towner a mile away!).

So there you have it. If you wish to relocate from your current location, I would put Richmond somewhere between Cleveland and Detroit on your list of viable destinations.

This is pretty much complete nonsense

Please do NOT listen to Toby Lee. He sounds like Jim Rockford posting under another name. They're "trolls".

N Santana, please read the many threads about Richmond. It is a great place to be! What kind of budget are you looking for on the rental? Check out Craigslist and see some houses you may like. They will probably range (in a nice suburb) anywhere from 800-1000+.

I will personally speak on North Chesterfield County because this is where we settled from Tennessee. Chesterfield County schools are consistently recognized nationally for their academic achievements. Chesterfield County itself was just rated in Top 100 Counties to live in. Midlothian also recognized this year as a "best place to live". Midlothian Turnpike and Hull Street have any restaurant and shopping available.

From where I live, I have I believe 4-5 shopping malls within 30 minutes.
-Chesterfield Towne Center is about 5 minutes away
-Stony Point Fashion Park (outdoor, high end) is about 15 minutes away
-Short Pump Towne Center (outdoor, mixture of high end and chain stores) is about 20 minutes away
-Regency Square is about 15-20 minutes away
-Virginia Center Commons is about 25-30 minutes away

The city is about a 15 minute commute where I can go and enjoy the many museums (mostly art and history here), enjoy Maymont Park and Byrd Park, shop local shops and restaurants at Carytown and see a cheap movie at historic Byrd Theatre.

Crime rate in Midlothian/North Chesterfield? Pfft! It is nearly non-existant. South Chesterfield...eh, somewhat of a different story. Look into Midlothian, North Chesterfield or Bon Air.

The Richmond Metro area? I praise the location of this area because of proximity. From here, I am 45 minutes to 1 hour from TWO theme parks (Busch Gardens, Kings Dominion), I am 1 1/2 hours-2 hours from Virginia Beach, 2 hours from DC, 3-4 hours from Baltimore, 3-4 hours from the mountains to the west, 2-3 hours from the Outer Banks in North Carolina, 4 hours from Charlotte. Can you really beat that when you are in a great place already?

Weather? Bipolar. Nice, but bipolar. Our summers are very humid and hot. Hell our winter so far this year has gone from 2 days in 70s to 5 days in the 50s. No snow this year or last year but a blizzard the year before that. The falls are nice though IMO. Springs kill me because of my allergies....high pollen in the area.

Racism? My family and I are of Palestinian descent. We have been welcomed into this county/village of Midlothian. A HELLLLLLLLLLL of a lot different from where we were in East Tennessee where we were constantly under fire since 9/11 (sucked so bad).

Richmond City? A lot of crappy areas. A lot of nice areas. Just have to know where to stay away from. Extremely diverse. VCU is the most diverse university in the Commonwealth.

Here's a music video we made a few years ago to show how great Richmond is to work and play in. Mind you, we only could fit so much in 5 minutes so we missed a few things but we captured a lot. Check it out!

Thank you sooo much for the great feedback! 800-1000 sounds perfect for rent! Would that get a nice 3 bedroom? Here in Ca you can't even rent a 1 bedroom apt for that! I will definetly check into those areas they sound like the perfect location! Yeah when I look up the crime ratings I am surprised at how poorly Virgina ranks! But so good to hear its it an issue In some parts. Obviously in any big city you will have your bad pockets... It's funny you say that about the weather because I started tracking it and thought the same thing!

Well, I may have mislead you and I apologize for that. Apparently rents have gone up lately! Expect it to be around $1000-$1200 for a NICE home/condo/apartment in the places I told you to look. Although $800-$1000 exist, they are likely in questionable areas. So, I do apologize for that. I didn't realize they took a spike that much!

And glad you liked the video!

Are you looking for homes only? Or are you considering apartments and condos?
