I know in Chezterfield that you are not able to apply after the 8th grade. And it does penalize those who move into the area; especially considering that we have a number of Fort Lee families. However, I do understand their reasoning. My son is in the engineering school in Chesterfield county. Most students in the County take Physics in the 12th grade, but because the principles learned in physics are needed in some of the engineering classes, he took that science in the 9th grade.

I wouldn't say so. Kids on advance tracks in Henrico who stay at their assigned high school are taking Algebra 2 has Freshman and have opportunities to take plenty of AP courses. There are tons and tons of "gifted" kids in Henrico and many of them stay at their assigned high school and are challenged.
