Looks like Richmond is mixed on safety depending on where I'm visiting.
I did a forum search on this earlier.

Looks like it's good for me to avoid being in places with "Hill" and "Court" at the end of them.
Also looks like the closer I am to Highland Park, the worse things generally get.

This past MLK day, there was a concern about gun protests issues in Richmond with potentially attracting extremists groups. Is this a more isolated situation, or would this affect how safe I should feel as a minority?

Thank you.

I wouldn't use that frame of thinking as a way to avoid crime in Richmond as there are great areas with Hill in their name(Forest Hill, Church Hill, etc). Court would be ok as it mostly denotes public housing and that is the same in a lot of cities. This rally was an isolated occurrence as there have been talks of gun laws being changed in Virginia. Richmond is majority-minority still if I'm not mistaken. You have nothing to worry about in that regard as Richmond is a pretty live and let live area. Most of the attendees of the rally were from elsewhere

Richmond has areas that have a higher potential for problems, that's no different than any other city in the country. As for the protest Richmond is the state capital and citizens were exercising their 1st amendment rights to protest for/against gun related legislation, it all went peaceful as it should. I can't see why your "minority" status should affect your safety one way or the other unless you are visiting areas in the city that have known problems.

Wikipedia but easily verifiable if you wish.

In 2012, Richmond had 42 murders, a murder rate of 20.2 per 100,000. In 2007 the FBI Uniform Crime Reports ranked Richmond as the 5th worst city for violent crimes with populations of 100,000 to 250,000. Today Richmond is not in the top 25 of violent crime or murder.

Richmond is in general pretty safe. Some locations, notably public housing, are not

Never rely on opinions where there is actual data.

Trulia.com

Enter a residential property address and it will pull in all the crime data.

Opinions are largely why people come here and have value to various degrees. I wouldn't try to rely solely on opinions OR facts as facts only give you bits and pieces of information. "Is this area safe" can only be partly gauged that way.
