I'm sure this subject has been covered before, but does anyone know what the bear population is around the Richmond and Charlottesville areas? My husband and I are looking to move up that way from NC and I am not real fond of having to worry about them . We have lived in neighborhoods where they were always around and they can be quite scary. I know they are in most places but as long as I don't see them very often, I would be ok. Any input will be helpful in our decision on where to go. Thanks.

I can't speak for Charlottesville, but bear sightings tend to be pretty rare in the Richmond area. Though, I guess it depends how far out you live.

Not true. It is rare to see, but there are bears in the Richmond metro area. A friend of mine has seen a 350 pounder on his property.

You usually don't notice the bears because they are masters of disguise.

very rare - never heard of a sighting in richmond when I was there, but once in the 7 years I lived in Cville, there was a bear sighting in downtown Charlottesville. He was supposedly friendly - just digging through trash cans

Thanks to all who have responded so far. We are looking to have a bit of land with dogs and goats, and if the bears really are a rare occurence, then I think we will be just fine. I always worry what my dogs might do if they were approached by a bear. Or myself, for that matter! I know they usually "bluff charge" but how do you know when they aren't???
