So funny!! I would visit Floyd more often if I could drive those winding, wooded, narrow roads. To me, its like being on an
amusement park ride! I dont know how those tour buses make it in and out of Floyd. The scenery down there is beyond stunning!

I lived in Floyd for 6 months last year. It is a nice small town and I did like it.
I did not live there in the wintertime, but locals did talk of how bad it could get, especially one that backed up to the Parkway. I lived in the Pittsburgh area before this and the Floyd climate was similar with less overcast, dreary days. I found the summer nights to be cool to cold. You did need A/C in the summertime to keep comfortable during the hot, humid days.
That said I would not want to commute to Roanoke over Bent Mountain in bad weather. Even the drive to Christiansburg was extremely windy and did not look like it would be fun in the winter.
Come check out Franklin County on the Roanoke side. I actually like it better than Floyd, which is why I landed here instead.

(1) is that an awful commute to Roanoke/Christiansburg? It looks to be 30ish minutes to Christiansburg and 45-60 to Roanoke... I am more concerned about winter weather driving....

(2) I don't see Air Conditioning listed in home listings - is it not "needed"??? I have lived in Hot Humid climates for too long, can't imagine not having A/c or are window units the norm...
I'm a little late to respond as I haven't popped into the Roanoke forum in a while. My husband commutes daily from Christiansburg to Floyd (just outside of "town") - his commute is 20 miles and takes about 30 minutes one-way, as the route is on Route 8 which is only one lane in either direction. A good portion of it is 55 MPH, but it's easy to get stuck behind someone moving slower than that.

We've discussed moving to Roanoke (which is where I prefer to live) but as mentioned, the commute -- while only perhaps 15 minutes longer on a good day -- would be treacherous in bad weather.

I can't imagine having no AC, either. We are running ours right now!
