Does the Roanoke, New River Valley, or other areas of SW Virginia have a First Night celebration? We have enjoyed them in Charlottesville and State College, PA.

Default First Night

According to the First Night International web site, no. There are several in Virginia, though.

Virginia
Alexandria
Charlottesville
Fredericksburg
Harrisonburg
Leesburg, VA
Warrenton
Williamsburg
Winchester

Participating Cities - First Night International

I will be at Williamsburg!

There is a New Year's charity gala at Hotel Roanoke:

Preceptor Omicron's New Year's Eve Gala 12.31.2008 at Hotel Roanoke - Roanoke, VA

The Homestead has a ballroom gala:

Virginia Resorts, Mountain Vacations & Historic Hotels In Hot Springs VA - The Homestead

The Floyd Country Store usually has a new year's celebration:

Floyd Country Store » Home

Enchanted Eve in Vinton:

Enchanted Eve (http://www.roanokecountyva.gov/Departments/ParksRecreationAndTourism/SpecialEvents/EnchantedEve.htm - broken link)

New Year's Eve Blast (21 and older) in Salem/Roanoke:

SponsorHounds.com (http://www.sponsorhounds.com/newyears.html - broken link)

The list goes on and on. It is my understanding that there is no official First Night celebration but there are a huge number of NYE events to choose from, from small venues to large galas.

pbheson and Sean,

Thanks very much for the info. I was hoping that there was a First Night website with a directory. I'm glad there are so many possibilities for New Year's in the area. My husband's birthday is that day and we'd like to find a family event (we have an elementary aged child) to attend on the 31rst.

Thanks,
Alice

BTW, First Night State College was pretty fun with ~100 ice sculptures, large and small, and a "Russian Ice Slide" for the kids (and any daredevil parents), live reindeer, etc.

The link is right on my original reply. The International web site is very good.
