If you have a family, the sacrifice of a commute from CLT to LYH wouldn't be worth it. There are plenty of folks here that aren't involved in church, enjoy live bands and shows, and are transplants as opposed to locals.

Hi. I'm new to Lynchburg, but I'm in your demographic and I chose to move downtown. It has a few artists (a starting scene), some great loft spaces and 100+ y.o. homes at great prices if you're so inclined. You can walk to the local coffee shops, and they regularly have acoustic stuff going on, if that's your thing. (and there are a few late night eating establishments for post gig—2 a.m.—munchies)

It can't be all bad from a musician aspect since there at least one fairly well known musician living in a downtown historic district. Also, it's closer to Charlottesville which has a much better music scene.

Plus, Lynchburg has train service which, in my instance, I regularly use to go to DC.

Downtown still needs to beef all this up if it wants to have a pulse that indicates any live blood circulation.

25 years ago Asheville NC was a rundown old southern city. Today--booming. Just have to keep on working on it and they will come.

That's what I'm thinking, but waiting it out and doing what you can to help does take a certain type, which is why I re-stress "starting scene"...

Heck, even Charlotte, where I grew up in pre-NBA, pre-NFL days, when it still had blue laws—speaking of, many stores downtown are closed on Sunday and that is one thing that IS driving me nuts—took time to become what it is today.

L has some advantages too--lots of college kids at least some of which will stick around and start new businesses and keep the city younger. Very low cost of living and a nice housing stock. Lots of quality homes to be restored available for cheap. Not too far from several larger cities. Solid diverse economy with growing high tech sector. Lower exposure to manufacturing and other dying industries. Pro growth attitude. Very low rents and ample cheap labor supply for start-up businesses.

So live it. Want museums -some of the best in the world are just three hours away in DC and most are free. Hotels are now very cheap. $59/night for a 3.5 star hotel. $79 for a 4 star. Concerts of all types are also within three hours with many locally or just an hour away in Cville or Roanoke. Restaurants--ample locally. Shopping-ample locally except high end which is also in DC area or Richmond--both within 3 hours. Or save $$$$ and shop on-line. Sports--ample locally.
Scenic drives/hiking--one of the best in US is just minutes away on the Blue Ridge Parkway. All you need is an attitude adjustment.

I'm sure he's done all this before, more than once. What everybody is referring to is sprucing up activity in Lynchburg.

You can only hit the road so many times.
