I was wondering if anyone remembers this, and any thoughts? I'm sure leadfoot knows if he lived here then.
It was proposed to be mostly in NW Wayne county, and I believe partially in Monroe. Something like 20 miles diameter.
I worked on it while at the U of R (ATLAS/CMS), it went back online again early last month. I started after the decision to move it to CERN Geneva had been decided.
IDK. I don't have a subscription, but it let me read it.
I tried again, just now, and the "error message" said that I had reached my limit to NY Times articles. I don't readily access their site, but apparently, over the years, I must have hit it a few times, and they kept track. Oh, well..........
With respect to the 20 mile tunnel, assuming it was perfectly round, I would assume that it would have a 10 mile radius, which might have run it near Lake Ontario, possibly Irondequoit Bay, and maybe even the Ginna nuclear plant. Would that much excavation, in that area, have been safe, given those natural factors?

So yeah, I remember it.
Dave
Do you happen to know why the Wayne County location wasn't chosen?

I couple points from the article. It wasn't a circle, it was to be an oval. Also, the reason it wasn't chosen was because of local objections. I believe our Senator was Moynahan, who said he would have pushed for it if we wanted it. Rochester has always had a NIMBY attitude about large projects. I always believed people had their Kodak or Xerox job, and figured they were set for life. I also wonder if maybe the large local companies were worried some of their brightest employees would be poached.
Any other questions. I can see if they'll let me back in?

Not for certain but the site was in "no mans land" and lack of support may have been a concern. Ultimately ppl would rather go to Geneva in Europe than the one in Wayne county

Best,

As I mentioned earlier, the apple farmers were complaining about how they couldn't survive with the price they got for their apples. When the Suppercollider project appeared, they complained about loosing their livelihood. Can't have it both ways
