I was wondering if anyone remembers this, and any thoughts? I'm sure leadfoot knows if he lived here then.
It was proposed to be mostly in NW Wayne county, and I believe partially in Monroe. Something like 20 miles diameter.
Yes, I remember, it was around 1987 and I was living in Gananda at the time. It was the superconducting supercollider (SSC) and there was a competition between different sites including the one in Wayne County. It was awarded to the site in Texas but was never completed due to cost. Got cancelled in 1993.

Yes, I certainly remember hearing about it, but I guess I'd totally forgotten about it. It seems that "ivyleaguediver", in post #2 is on target.
^ I remember long before it was proposed, all of the apple farmers were complaining about the price they were getting for their crop, and they couldn't afford to do it anymore. When the Supercollider was proposed, they all cried about how they would lose their lively hood.
What a shame. That would have been quite a boost for the area.
After browsing the attached article a second time, I find it hard to believe, on one hand, and totally sickening, on the other, that the Government would spend SO many billions of dollars, apparently mismanaging it along the way, dig 14 miles of a 20 mile tunnel, then simply walk away from it....
("ivyleaguediver", if you're still checking in on this thread, do you happen to recall where the "center" of the tunnel would have been, had it been constructed in Wayne County?)
Accessing that article requires a subscription to the NY Times. Is there a way to "sidestep" it?
