Persuing some local job openings, I see lots of tech repair and maintenance jobs which pay very well, and don't require much in the way of education. More like tech education and on-the-job learning.
I travel for work east of the Mississippi, and often times strike up conversations with random folks while they're working. Average age I see for techs who travel, say, locally near where they live, is 55 or so. Copier/printer/scanner repair, PLC controller repair and uogrades, etc. These folks live well, pay for higher-skilled folks ranges from around $80K plus benefits, to well north of $100K/year. If ai were young again in a place like Rochester I'd be gunning for such a career track, which like HVAC and others often times translates to folks going into business for themselves.
Alternative education is where it's at for a lot of career paths, in my opinion.
Edit:
RocMakers has been there a while, glad to see it's going well. It was a machine shop years ago.
