However, as a forester I have lived and worked across the entire western US.
Smaller towns ARE different. They are not at all like big cities, which are pretty much the same no matter where you live.
There are great small towns, and quite of few of those have now become small cities!!! A couple are now well on the way to pretty large metro status.
I remember in the 1970's trying to move to Boise. Friends laughing at me for wanting to live in Boise. These days, I don't want to live in Boise, but quite a few of my friends live there!!!
The perfect place is different for everybody. The worse part, is that these days, the perfect place is unlikely to remain the perfect place as urban refugees flood out over the landscape.
Choose carefully, and wisely. Just because a place is nice to visit, doesn't make it a nice place to live.
Another thing is that at different life stages people are looking for different things. When the kids are grown, schools don't matter. Jobs change, people want a place closer to family (or move further away). In addition to the place changing, people change. Some people keep making their current place work, others go seeking a better fit for their current situation.
Someone talks down about people who move... that shows their slave mentality. Sit where you are, don't go anywhere, that's what feudals and slave owners used to say.
America was populated by Europeans who, you know, had moved and kept moving, instead of sitting on their rear ends.
Someone should get over people exercising their rights to free movement, it's a free country.
It appears my post shot right over a couple people's heads...including yours. The point wasen't about moving..or moving often. The idea I put forth was that some folks will Never be happy in life ...wherever they live. Didn't think I would have to stop back and spell that out.
Apparently I thought I found the perfect place. Too bad it’s the wrong state.
It’s a shame but looks like we gotta go. Can’t take draconian state government any longer.

Socialist republic of New York. Not sure where we’re going yet, still kicking tires in a few states.
Might just do the rent thing for a while and live out of suitcases until we find someplace free, safe, and stable before buying. Don’t want to make another mistake. Moving sucks.

We're in the latter group, but I'm tired of being so settled and cautious. We analyze every detail of a home/area to death because we don't want to make a bad financial decision. We're ready to just go with what feels right for us at this moment in time. Life is short. If we don't like where we live and have the means to move elsewhere, why not do it?
Some of our moves where we spent very little time calculating out all the pro/con's ending up being our best ones. We are ready to move again this time from the West Coast to...well I don't know where yet.
Life is indeed short...looking back I am glad for the nomadic lives we've lived full of new experiences, new homes, and making new friends.
We've been happy in all the places we've lived - we just like wandering and making change.
Yeah we’re kicking around the RV thing while we bounce around and figure out where to plant our assess. It’s a thought bubble though. It’s that or rent.
Don’t want to buy again until we know we found the right place. Buying and selling sucks, and the actual moving sucks more. I always say never again, I always say this is the house I die in, but we keep moving lol. This time I mean it lol

Good luck with that plan
When I retired, we had not spent over three years at any location. We had gotten into the routine of moving frequently. Our retirement move was the first time for us to decide where we wanted to go. It had never been an option before. We had always just gone wherever the Navy sent us and just bought a new apartment complex in that location.
By retiring, we knew that our traveling was over, and we needed to pick a spot where we would be comfortable for a long time.
We have been here in this spot for seventeen years. A few times we have had the urge to pack up and move again, but so far we have been able to calm that urge.
