This is because of low density suburban and exurban sprawl in SW Ohio. The cities there are extremely sprawly and very suburban oriented with the urban cores mostly in decline.
The number of farms are also on the decline in the Great Plains due to massive consolidation as the big farms and ranches become larger in size. The family farms are also caught up in the corporate agriculture cycle because most of the products are then transported to the mega commercial ag centers on the High Plains such as Garden City, Dodge City, Liberal, Lexington, NE, etc. The entire concept of local agriculture has literally vanished in some parts of the country while other areas see a complete resurgance in local farmers markets and locally grown foods.
As long as the corporate ag model is KING you will continue to see small towns completely disappear off the map as mass efficiences, economies of scale, and commercialization wreck havoc on small towns.
