I will be attending a conference in Sacramento in August from Mon. to Thursday with Thursday afternoon and Friday off. What areas should I visit in such a short time near the Hyatt Regency??

Perhaps the Capitol and Old Sac, both within easy walking distance. See what's playing in the theaters. If you want to drive you'll be within two or so hours of the Napa Valley, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and Reno. For a more relaxing time, head for the Gold Country foothills and take in the sights. There are also museums all around.

Is this concert close to the Hyatt??

A day in Napa valley sounds great too.
Thanks for your responses!!!

Yes, it is about 4 blocks away, an easy walk but far enough away that you won't hear it if you don't attend. A drive to Napa is nice but there are a couple wineries in downtown Sacramento (Railbridge Cellars and Revolution Wines) if you don't feel like spending a few hours in the car.

Plymouth (Amador County) also has some really nice, really pretty wineries to visit. It is maybe 45 minutes from downtown Sac. It is much less commercial than Napa, you will get more personal service, and the wine tasting is free (unlike Napa). The scenery can't be beat. If you go on a Friday, you can stop at Villa Toscana (sp?) for the pasta buffet lunch. The food is average but a beautiful vineyard, huge outdoor patio, nice wines, and one of the few places in the area to eat.

I'm glad you liked the Amador wineries! My friends always want to go to Napa when they visit and I have to twist their arms to get them to Plymouth instead. They always like it afterwards!
