Since we are still house hunting and want to make sure we stay by my son's school - we look at parts of Fair Oaks (that we are renting in now) and the most southern part of Orangevale - which is called Arden Bluffs.

And we noticed in a crime search and "local info" section of ZipRealty, that Orangevale's total crime is 71 of 100 of the US average - and Fair Oaks is 106!

Really????

I guess I don't know my statistics. But when I lived in Midtown - I'll just say the rumor was that Orangevale was a mostly blue collar, run down, (insert crime ridden) kind of place.

I guess that's wrong?
How do you explain it.

You gotta remember in the nice parts of suburban sac most of the violent crime is lower but property crime can vary from time to time. All it takes is a couple career burglars to spike an areas crime rate up. Any who I would say both areas are nice. Fair oaks has a bit better schools but both areas seem relatively safe. A good tool to use is this crime mapper with the sac sherriffs dept. They cover fair oaks and orangevale so you can get a good idea of the reported crimes in your area or where the houses you are looking for

Grew up in Ovale, currently live in Fair Oaks. They are practically the same town, really. Both fairly low crime in my opinion.

Fair Oaks has a few shopping centers adjacent to Citrus Heights and many more apartment complexes than Orangevale.

Crime could be lower here because of what is stated above by another poster (shopping center). It is difficult to get anywhere from Orangevale other than the adjoining suburbs, so think about that before moving here, especially if you have to commute. There are some bigger yards here, but they also have many prostitution outlets, ala 'massage' parlors here. If I had kids, I wouldn't want them to be subjected to that and there are many right on the main drag, Greenback. Not sure why they allow that. I wouldn't move here again. There also seems to be a lot of bars here and petty crime (property destruction, stealing) if you aren't watching your place. Citrus Heights seems to be a little 'cleaner' and concerned overall, but not much. There are bad parts to many areas here in the burbs and in Sac (like I-80 and Watt or I-80 and Madison, crime, drugs, prostitution/escorts). Stay away from areas that have easy highway access and drive some of the routes you are anticipating at the busy traffic hours.
